The Aramide Ladega Med – Fit is an annual outreach programme organized by the Seniors Wellbeing Foundation, a non-governmental organization in Nigeria, to initially cater for senior citizens only, particularly those that are dealing with hypertension and diabetes. But, it has now been expanded to include people of all ages. It was initiated in 2024 in honour of Olori Aramide Ladega, who battled diabetes for nearly 30 years before her passing in 2023, by her United States of America (USA) based daughter, Princess Aderoju Ladega.
She spoke with Kunle Adelabu, Publisher/Reporter – in – Chief, THE IMPACT newspaper online on the preparation for this year’s edition of the two – day medical and social engagement with senior citizens in Ikorodu. Excerpts:
THE IMPACT: What is Aramide Ladega Med-Fit about and what inspired its creation?

Princess Ladega: Aramide Ladega Med-Fit is a two-day event designed to inspire, educate, and foster inclusivity for senior citizens, particularly those managing diabetes and hypertension. The initiative provides a platform for social interaction, medical assessment, consultation, diagnosis, and health education. In addition, it incorporates evidence-based recreational and leisure activities alongside a comprehensive medical outreach. Organized by the Seniors Wellbeing Foundation, a non-governmental organization in Nigeria, this initiative is a heartfelt tribute to my late mother, Olori Aramide Ladega, who courageously battled diabetes for nearly 30 years before her passing in 2023. Her resilience and unwavering commitment to community welfare inspired the creation of this program to support others facing similar health challenges.
This initiative serves as a living tribute to my mother, fondly known as Big Mummy, whose selfless nature and dedication to humanity left a lasting impact. Through this programme, we continue her legacy of service by offering essential healthcare, fostering community support, and encouraging proactive wellness habits among participants. I believe she would be deeply moved to see her name and legacy endure.

The theme for the second edition is “Wellness Through the Ages.” This theme emerged from observation during the inaugural edition — while our initial focus was on older adults, it became evident that individuals across all age groups are increasingly conscious of their health and wellness. As a result, we broadened our approach to ensure inclusivity, emphasizing that well-being is a lifelong journey.
THE IMPACT: What are the key highlights and activities planned for this year’s event?
Princess Ladega: The event is structured into two impactful days:
Day 1: Recreation & Social Engagement, Fitness session, Movie screening, Light refreshments and networking.
On the Day 2, Medical Outreach, Comprehensive health screenings (diabetes, hypertension, and general wellness checks), Free medical consultations with healthcare professionals and the distribution of prescribed medications. These activities are designed to create a balanced experience, promoting both physical well-being and social inclusion.

THE IMPACT: Who are the target audience for this event, and why should people attend?
Princess Ladega: Initially, the event focused on individuals diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension. However, recognizing the increasing prevalence of these conditions among younger demographics, we have expanded our reach. We now welcome participants of all ages who are interested in gaining knowledge, accessing free health services, and adopting proactive wellness practices. Given the rising incidence of diabetes among teenagers as young as fifteen, this initiative underscores the importance of early intervention and health awareness.
THE IMPACT: What kind of medical services will be provided, and who are the healthcare professionals involved?
Princess Ladega: Participants will benefit from free screening for diabetes and hypertension, access to medical consultations and guidance and there will be distribution of essential medications based on their health assessment.

We are discussing with General Hospital Ikorodu, which generously contributed medical equipment and three healthcare professionals for the first edition. They also assisted in sourcing medications and ensuring that participants received appropriate prescriptions. Additionally, we engaged a team of five nurses to provide extra support.
THE IMPACT: Apart from medical check-ups and consultations, what other wellness-focused activities can participants look forward to?
Princess Ladega: Beyond medical services, we offer fitness sessions to encourage active lifestyles and physical independence, movie screenings that foster social engagement and emotional well-being, and interactive discussions on wellness and healthy living. These activities promote holistic health by addressing physical conditions and mental and social well-being. This initiative has a far-reaching impact, contributing to improved physical health through early detection and intervention, better mental health by reducing isolation and fostering a sense of community.
It increases social engagement through recreational activities, and enhanced quality of life for participants, particularly seniors. By promoting preventive healthcare and active living, we aim to support successful aging and community-wide wellness.

THE IMPACT: Any success stories or notable impacts from the previous edition?
Princess Ladega: Yes, we have received several encouraging testimonials. Many participants shared that the fitness sessions motivated them to adopt light exercise routines at home. Others reported significant improvements in their health after receiving free medications. These stories reinforce the importance of continued community health interventions.
THE IMPACT: How can individuals, organizations, or volunteers contribute to the event?
Princess Ladega: The success of our first edition was driven by collective effort. We were privileged to receive support from the Management of General Hospital, Ikorodu, that officially assigned three healthcare professionals to work with us during the event and provide medical expertise and support. In addition to their professional services, they brought essential medical screening equipment, including blood pressure monitors, glucometers, and testing strips, which played a crucial role in detecting cases of hypertension and diabetes among attendees. The availability of these devices ensured accurate, on-the-spot assessments, enabling timely medical advice and intervention. Many beneficiaries who were previously unaware of their health conditions were able to receive immediate guidance on necessary lifestyle adjustments and, where needed, were referred for further medical attention.

Mr. Fola Tinubu of Primero, made a generous financial contribution, Mr. Deen Sanwoola, covered the cost of the event venue, while, Mrs. Ojikutu (UK) and a family friend in the UK, also donated funds. DJ Slim, provided discounted Disc Jockey services and there are other selfless individuals and volunteers that ensured each stage of the planning process went smoothly.
For this year’s edition, we have launched a Volunteer Sign-Up Form on social media, which has already received an overwhelming response. Inspired by the Yoruba proverb “Igi kan o le da igbo se” (One tree does not make a forest), we encourage collective participation, as everyone has a role to play in making this event a success.
THE IMPACT: What are the biggest challenge(s) in organizing an event of this scale, and how are they being addressed?

Princess Ladega: One of the major challenges is accessing free or subsidized resources. Having lived in a system where official responses — whether positive or negative — are prompt and reliable, it has been a stark contrast navigating bureaucratic processes in Nigeria. In the U.S., there’s a structured process where requests sent to public office holders, government institutions, or organizations are acknowledged and responded to within a reasonable timeframe, even if the response is a decline. This efficiency allows for timely adjustments and alternative planning. In Nigeria, however, things work differently. Follow-ups are often necessary to receive any form of response, and in many cases, multiple attempts go unanswered. This cultural norm means that one must reach out, sometimes over extended periods, to secure even the most basic approvals or support.
That said, I have adapted to this reality and structured my approach accordingly. While I am not inclined to chase after people for financial support, I remain proactive in seeking alternative options. If Plan A doesn’t work, I immediately consider Plan B or C, ensuring that the event’s objectives are met regardless of bureaucratic delays or lack of responsiveness.

THE IMPACT: What message do you have for the public regarding health and wellness, especially in today’s fast-paced world?
Princess Ladega: Using myself as an example, I prioritize a healthy lifestyle by scheduling regular checkups, maintaining a balanced diet, and ensuring adequate rest. While I admit I need to be more consistent with exercise (lol), the key takeaway is that health should never be taken for granted. To everyone reading this: be proactive about your well-being. Prioritize your health, listen to your body, and make conscious efforts toward wellness. After all, our health is our peace.
